The Dentice Offshore Wind Project has reached an important milestone with the official submission of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE), marking the beginning of the public consultation phase.
Developed by the consortium formed by Oxan Energy, Ingka Investments and Avapa Energy, Dentice is a floating offshore wind project located off the southern coast of Sicily, in the Strait of Sicily. With an installed capacity of 1.14 GW, the project is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply up to 1.5 million households, contributing significantly to Italy’s energy transition and decarbonisation objectives.
A strategic floating offshore wind project in the Mediterranean
Situated between 22 and 40 kilometres offshore, on seabeds ranging from 280 to 650 metres deep, Dentice is designed as a floating offshore wind farm, a technology particularly suited to the deep waters of the Mediterranean basin. The project reflects the growing role floating offshore wind can play in strengthening Europe’s energy independence while accelerating the deployment of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure in regions where bottom-fixed solutions are not technically viable.
For Italy, Dentice represents one of the most advanced floating offshore wind developments currently progressing through the permitting process.
2 years of environmental and technical studies
The EIA submission follows an extensive campaign of environmental and technical investigations initiated in early 2024. Over the past two years, the consortium has conducted seasonal environmental surveys, marine ecosystem assessments, bird and marine fauna monitoring, geophysical investigations and archaeological studies to build a comprehensive understanding of the project area and support the environmental assessment process.
These studies form a critical part of the project’s development approach, ensuring that technical design and environmental considerations progress together from the earliest stages.
The launch of the public consultation phase now opens a new chapter focused on dialogue with institutions, local stakeholders and territorial actors throughout the permitting process.
A consortium combining complementary expertise
Dentice is developed by a consortium bringing together international offshore wind experience, long-term renewable energy investment capabilities and deep knowledge of the Italian regulatory landscape.
Oxan Energy contributes its expertise in floating offshore wind development across European and international markets.
Ingka Investments brings extensive experience as a global renewable energy investor, with more than 10 GW of renewable capacity in its portfolio.
Avapa Energy provides strong knowledge of the Italian energy sector and permitting environment, supporting the project’s local development and regulatory pathway.
